Top 4 Areas Where Termites Live:

Termites are more than just a common household pest; they are the every homeowner’s worst nightmare. Why? Because termites cause an estimated $5 billion in damage each year according to the NPMA, with the average homeowner spending upwards of $3,000 in repairs.

Luckily, the sooner a termite infestation or fungus condition is dealt with, the less it will cost you.
Some of the common areas we check during our inspection for signs of a termite infestation include these Top 4 household areas:
Hardwood Flooring
  • If you have a “slab” foundation, then termites can enter from the ground at any location and begin feeding on your hardwood floors. If your house has a sub-ground foundation, then begin your inspection near the edge of the floor since termites will enter from the perimeter of the foundation.
Garages and Workshops
  • Chances are good that your garage or workshop contains a considerable amount of wood (including tools, spare lumber, and firewood). When you’re working inside of your garage or workshop, be sure to keep an eye out for the tell-tale signs of a termite problem.
Attics and Crawlspaces
  • In most cases, subterranean termites must be in contact with soil to receive the moisture they need to survive. However, there are certain species of termite which are known to build aboveground nests in dark and damp areas – areas much like your attic and crawlspace.
Exterior Foundations
  • Exterior inspections may provide you with the only opportunity to catch termites before they invade your home. Be sure to check the exterior foundation, siding, and wood carefully for signs of termite activity and areas where termites may enter your home (such as cracks in the foundation or siding).

Dry Rot Damage Repair:

A certain species of fungus causes dry rot. Its spores land on wood, and with enough moisture it thrives, despite the name. You may see white or grey growth on the wood and even a mushroom-like body if advanced. Other visible signs of dry rot include blistering, cracked or peeling paint , wood darker than surrounding areas, and green algae on the wood.
Window and door sills are most often affected by dry rot, but it can grow into non-wood surfaces in contact with the ground. It also can spread to non-wood materials such as plaster and mortar.
Defender Integrated Pest Management and Termite Services can inspect and identify the presence of dryrot and in most cases, determine the source and perform the needed repairs.

Repair Vs. Replacement:

Certain amounts of dry rot can be repaired, but it is not recommended if the affected areas provide structural stability to your home, such as with beams and joints, or even with flooring for that matter. In those cases, you should replace the wood instead of repairing it.

Whether you repair or replace the wood, you must eliminate the conditions that allowed the rot to thrive or face it coming back. Locate the cause of moisture buildup by checking for roof leaks, damaged gutters or downspouts, plumbing leaks and/or poor ventilation.
