Termite Identification & Prevention

What are termites?

Termites are social insects that live and work together in a machine-like, efficient manner. In Northern California, two types of termites regularly infest our homes; subterranean termites and drywood termites. Knowing a bit of information about each will help you protect your home from these wood-eating, destructive pests.

Drywood termites

Drywood termites are often found in coastal areas but transported to interior areas inside of infested wood. As their name suggests, these termites thrive in pieces of wood with very low moisture content; they don’t feed on wet or water-damaged wood. Drywood termites nest within the wood they are feeding on.

Subterranean termites

As their name suggests, subterranean termites nest underground. These termites have very high moisture needs and build their nests within damp soil, and prefer to feed on water-damaged or decaying wood. They do not live within the wood they feed on; instead, subterranean termites travel through the soil or through mud tubes they create from their nest to food sources each day. Subterranean termites are the most widespread species living across the country.

Are termites dangerous?

Discovering termites or noticing their signs in your Northern California home is unsettling, not because they cause us physical harm, but because they harm our property! Termites are wood-destroying pests that, after finding their way into our homes, will cause costly and extensive damage. More than five billion dollars in spent in repairing damage caused by termites across the country each year.

Most homeowners' insurance does not cover termite damage because they view it as preventable, and the damage occurs over a long period, many months or years. Termites are pests that not only damage the structure of our homes but our bank accounts!

Why do I have a termite problem?

Drywood and subterranean termites regularly enter homes and other structures on their own from the outside.

Subterranean termites usually find their way inside through cracks in the foundation as they travel through the soil. They also move inside through wood, making direct contact with the earth, such as wood trim, steps, or shingles.

Subterranean termites are attracted to moisture, so properties with very wet soil, leaking pipes, and poor ventilation in basements or crawl spaces are where termites make themselves at home.

Drywood termites move inside through cracks they find in the foundation, exterior walls, or foundation of your home. They are also regularly transported inside in wood furniture, antiques, flooring, and structural beams.

Where are termites commonly found?

It is rare to see termites because they spend most of their lives hidden, either underground or within the wood they are feeding on.

In our homes, termites often attack wood behind walls and under floors near leaky pipes or areas with poor ventilation. Drywood termites will also attack and live inside of wooden furniture or other wooden structures.

Termite swarms are often what alert homeowners to a problem with these wood-eating pests. A termites swarm is when mature, winged, reproductive termites emerge from their nest with the intent of finding a mate and starting a new nest. Subterranean termites usually swarm in the spring after heavy rains and most often occur in September and October.

Seeing flying termites or piles of their shed wings around your house means that you should immediately seek a professional to locate and eliminate the termite nest located either on or near your property.
