Stinging Insect Identification & Prevention

Stinging Insects

What are stinging insects?

If you have predatory stinging insects living or feeding on your Northern California property, they are likely wasps, hornets, or yellow jackets. All three species have stingers at the end of the abdomen to defend themselves from attack and paralyze to prey.

Hornets and wasps look very similar with their long, hairless bodies and narrow waists. They are usually a combination of yellow and black, yellow and brown, or white and black. One of the most common types of wasps is the yellow jacket.

Are stinging insects dangerous?

Stinging insects are an important part of the environment. While predatory species aren’t important pollinators like bees, they help with some pollination. Their main benefit is their ability to control populations of nuisance insects.

Despite their benefits, when stinging insects move into our yards, or worse, our homes, they pose a threat to you, your family, and your pets. Being stung by a stinging insect is painful and may trigger a severe allergic reaction that can be life-threatening in some people.

Having to dodge stinging insects in your yard is stressful and can drive you and your family indoors.

Why do I have a stinging insect problem?

Like most of our yards, if yours has grass, shrubs, trees, gardens, or flowerbeds, you will likely experience a problem with stinging insects at one point or another. These opportunistic pests will take advantage of any space that provides them with their basic food and water needs, and if safe shelter is available, even better!

Unfortunately for us, most of our Northern California home’s outdoor spaces provide a place that stinging insects can use to forage for food or build a nest.

Where are stinging insects commonly found?

Hornets and wasps feed on sweets and proteins, and in addition to insects, they consume many of the same foods and drinks that we do. These stinging insects are common pests around outdoor eating areas, trash cans, recycling bins, and compost piles, as our leftovers provide them with prized sources of food!

Nesting sites vary depending on the species, but stinging insects commonly build nests in ground holes, trees, attic spaces, outbuildings, and on our home's exterior. Some other common nesting sites include:

  • Under grills
  • In playhouses
  • On fences or under wooden furniture
  • Under decks or porch steps
  • Inside vents or chimneys
  • Behind siding or shutters
