Rodent Identification & Prevention

Rodents

What are rodents?

If you hear scratching or running sounds behind your walls, find gnaw marks on cabinets, floors, or furniture, or notice a musty, unpleasant odor somewhere in your house, the most likely cause is rodents. Mice and rats are common household pests in Sacramento, and some of the most frustrating critters that home and businesses owners deal with regularly.

In Northern California and throughout much of the country, the three main species of rodents that wreak havoc in our structures are the house mouse, roof rat, and Norway rat.

House mice are small rodents with oval bodies. They have a triangular head, pointed nose, and large ears that stand up off their head. A layer of velvety fur covers their long skinny tail.

Norway rats are large, and the fur covering their body is brown and peppered with black hairs. Norway rats have a blunt nose, and their scaly tail is shorter than the head and body combined.

Roof rats are smaller than Norway rats with a lighter build. They have dark fur, a pointed nose, and their tail is longer than the total length of their head and body.

Are rodents dangerous?

The various threats that rodents pose to people and property make them dangerous in our yards, homes, outbuildings, and commercial properties.

As rodents move about throughout our homes, they contaminate surfaces, food, food prep areas, dishes, and more with their shed fur and excrement. Their shed fur and waste often trigger skin allergies and breathing difficulties in people. Rodents also spread diseases and bacteria that make people ill.

Rodents are equipped with sharp front and incisors and won't hesitate to use them to chew holes in walls, boxes, furniture, clothing, wires, cables, and pipes.

Fleas and ticks also infest these small mammals, and they can spread these parasites throughout your house.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

Rodents live all around us in large numbers; they thrive and survive in large groups in rural and urban areas. Our indoor and outdoor spaces provide them with the things they need like food, water, and safe hiding and nesting spots. Mice and rats are commensal rodents, which means they want to "share our table," and utilize the resources we provide while offering nothing positive in return.

Where are rodents commonly found?

Roof rats are adept climbers and, more often than not, move indoors through spaces they find above the ground, like at the roofline or through chimneys.

Norway rats are heavy-bodied rodents that prefer to stay at ground level. They move into structures through spaces they discover under doors, in the foundation, or through vents or ducts.

House mice are agile and quick-moving, and they can jump. They move indoors through any openings they come across. They only need an space the diameter of a pencil to enter a home or place of business.

Inside our homes, rodents tend to hang out in similar areas; they are prey animals, and their instinct is to nest in dark, quiet places that protect them from predators. In our homes, rodents nest in the following spaces:

  • Attics
  • Wall voids and crawl spaces
  • Basements
  • The backs of cabinets
  • Behind large appliances
  • Under or within furniture
  • Inside boxes or other clutter that builds up in all our homes.
