How Do Mice Keep Getting Into My Sacramento Home?

December 15, 2021 - rodents

Do you know how everyone jumps on the counter and tables in cartoons when a tiny mouse scurries across the floor? The chances are that the little mouse on your television is supposed to be a common house mouse, which can run up to eight miles per day, so you would probably react the same way! Plus, these little scurrying critters will not only catch you off guard, but they are dangerous and destructive too.

Common house mice are about five and a half to seven inches long, including their tail, which is long, skinny, and covered in a layer of velvety fur. Their bodies are round and covered in light brown to dark gray fur. This species has large ears, whiskers, a pointed muzzle, and small black eyes.

Although small, an infestation of this pest can lead to many problems for Sacramento residents. Mice reproduce quickly, so once inside, their numbers will grow exponentially. They will use materials from your home to build nests and get into your food to feed themselves. Other problems this rodent can cause include:

  • Chewing through food packaging and contaminating food and surfaces.
  • Spreading diseases such as hantavirus, plague, Lassa fever, salmonellosis, leptospirosis, and more.
  • Carrying and spreading parasites such as fleas and ticks.
  • Damaging furniture and personal belongings.
  • Causing fire and flood hazards by chewing through wires and pipes.
  • Leaving dangerous droppings and urine throughout your property.

Stop Attracting Mice

There is a good reason house mice are common; they have a dependency on humans created over centuries of living in close proximity. Because of this, any home can be unknowingly attracting these rodents to their home:

  • One of the main reasons mice are attracted to homes is easy to access to food from humans, pet food, bird feeders, garbage, or fruits and vegetables from gardens.
  • Another reason mice might like a home is if there are places they can hide from people. Clutter inside and debris in your yard can provide hiding places where mice can nest and live comfortably away from natural predators.
  • Finally, if your home provides easy access inside, there is a good chance mice won’t hesitate to infest. House mice only need a hole the size of a dime to squeeze through, and they can use their strong teeth the make holes bigger. They can chew through just about any material.

Now that you know why and how house mice get in, you need to know the ways you can keep them out.

Keep Mice Out

House mice are tricky pests to keep out because they are quick and resourceful. However, you can implement the following to try and stop attracting them:

  • Repair any holes and cracks in the exterior of your home to remove potential entry points.
  • Replace damaged screens and weather stripping around doors and windows.
  • Repair any leaky faucets to remove water sources.
  • Store food properly, remove bird feeders and keep garbage cans secure.
  • Store firewood properly and remove unnecessary debris from your yard.
